[TWOL Talks] The Danger Of A Single Story: By Chimamanda Adichie

“The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue but that they are incomplete.”

Chimamanda Adichie

Author Life Notes:

Author Lessons From The Talk:

1. When people are repeatedly shown to be only one thing, whether true or not , that is all they are known to be. It becomes their single story.

Are there single stories you have picked up about things or people from the literature you’ve been exposed to since childhood?

The biases authors have often find their way into their own writing. This is dangerous because an accurate message from God can end up corrupted by an author’s unchecked biases.

2. The writer’s power is in their ability to shape how someone or something is defined by others.

It’s your responsibility as a writer to recognize and address any conscious and unconscious bias you have concerning people or things. This is one of the ways authors can demonstrate good stewardship of the talent God has given them.

You can do so by asking God to search your heart and identify any areas where your mind is need of renewal.

3. Freedom is found in the realization that there is no single story about anyone or anything.

Allow God to be your primary source of revelation on everyone and everything in your life. Submit your thoughts and opinions to Him. Guard your heart from influences that are contrary to His word. This will help shape you into a literary vessel that He can use to share His unadulterated message with His people.
